Street Food

"If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion, and avoid the people, you might better stay home."

~ James Michener

Wise words! Especially the food part. When I'm on vacation, the food that I love the most is invariably prepared and served from a cart on the side of the road.  We scored some seriously good street food on our recent trip to the Yucatan in Mexico:

This tamale was like a big glob of love all wrapped up in a banana leaf. We bought it from a young lady in a park in Valladolid for less than a dollar.

And right across the park in Valladolid, these fellas were serving up some pork deliciousness on a nice crusty bread. When the juices from the pork and the salsa picante soaked up into the bread, the result was heaven on a sandwich.
Between climbing on temples in Coba and swimming in a beautiful cenote, we stopped at a little stand selling pork tacos. This pork had been marinating - I don't know, for like a year. You could almost suck it up through a straw. He asked if I wanted some of the fatty parts. Let me think about that for a second... "Yes. Yes I do."
Here is Latin America's answer to fast food. Sure, they've got Burger King and McDonalds, but why go there when you can get something natural, made with love and fresh ingredients, for a fraction of the price? Home-made mango popsicles, corn with pulverized queso blanco and chilli powder, and coconut water you drink straight out of the coconut with a straw. If this kind of fast food is wrong, I don't want to be right!

  2. Yes, we just ate hallacas at Christmas time - my wife's parents came up from Venezuela to spend the holidays with us. I love hallacas! We still have a few left over in the fridge...

On this trip we passed through Valladolid Mexico - not too far away from Playa Del Carmen. It was a fantastic trip - lots of beautiful sites and things to do.
